Youm Wara Youm by Yomna Mohamed
Youm Wara Youm is a 2026 Arabic calendar and artist book created in collaboration between Makan and multidisciplinary artist Yomna Mohamed. Printed in five vivid Risograph colors, the project draws from Egypt’s long-standing tradition of locally produced calendars—objects found in homes, barber shops, workshops, street kiosks, and offices across the country. These calendars, often overlooked, hold a rich visual language: exuberant compositions, saturated palettes, devotional imagery, and a bold confidence in ornamentation. Youm Wara Youm pays homage to this vernacular world, honoring the independent printers and publishers whose work has shaped the everyday aesthetic landscape of Egypt and much of the Arab region.
The publication borrows intentionally from this visual vocabulary—its exuberant layering, typographic play, and unmistakable sense of warmth—while reimagining it through contemporary printmaking. Part functional calendar, part art object, Youm Wara Youm exists in the space between utility and cultural memory.
With this project, Makan continues its commitment to publishing that centers the Global South, exploring vernacular design histories and expanding the possibilities of the printed form. The calendar becomes a site of cultural authorship—bridging past and present, personal and collective memory, and the fluid movement of Arab aesthetics between cities, continents, and diasporas.
Working across graphic design, photography, and print media, Yomna's practice examines Egyptian and broader Arab visual culture, with a focus on everyday objects, domestic interiors, and vernacular design. Through her work, she reframes ephemera—posters, calendars, packaging, household prints—as meaningful cultural texts that shape how people see, remember, and imagine their environments.
